The vendor day is an experiential learning initiative, with a social focus. By donning a Big Issue jacket to sell the Big Issue magazine, alongside Big Issue vendors, participants gain first-hand insight into the challenges and barriers that some of the most excluded people in society face daily; exposing a very different perspective on life. Big Issue vendors are tenacious; setting up their micro-enterprises in the midst of real adversity. So as well as raising awareness of the challenges of homelessness and poverty, the experience is equally inspiring and humbling.
Delegates are split into teams to sell the most magazines alongside their Big Issue vendor (all proceeds from the sales of magazines go to the vendor). For healthy competition we encourage teams to pitch up against each other, similar to a challenge on the popular TV programme ‘The Apprentice’. Adding a sense of fun and camaraderie, but not negating the life transformational impact that the day holds as common misconceptions around homelessness change.
